Gerard Hartsink

Chair of the ICC Digital Trade Standards Initiative Industry Advisory Board

Gerard Hartsink serves as the Chair of the ICC Digital Trade Standard Initiative Industry Advisory Board, dedicated to further advancing the digitalisation of international supply chains.

He actively participates in various organisations focusing on the development and advocacy of legal and technical standards for both business-to-business (B2B) and consumer-to-business (C2B) e-commerce.

Notably, he delivered the ISO Technical Committee 307 Technical Report 6039 titled “Identifiers of subjects and objects for the design of blockchain systems”, offering a comprehensive overview of all available standards and their registers, relevant to international supply chains.

He is a member of the ECB’s Digital Euro Market Advisory Group and is significantly involved in shaping Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) for cross-border transactions within the framework of his responsibilities for ISO TC68 AG5 Digital Currencies.

Throughout his career, he has gained extensive expertise in various industries, including payments, identity management, foreign exchange, and securities.

He has held prominent positions such as Chairman of the Boards of GLEIF, CLS Bank International, and the European Payments Council. Moreover, he served as the Convenor of RMG of ISO 20022 and as a Board Member of influential entities like SWIFT, LCH, Euroclear Netherlands, Euro Banking Association (EBA), and Electronic Commerce Platform Nederland.

Prior to his current roles, he served as Senior Executive Vice-President of ABN AMRO Bank, where he accumulated a wealth of experience in diverse areas, including sales, product development, regulatory affairs, information management, and operations.

Gerard earned Master of Arts degrees in political economy from the University of Amsterdam and in law from the Free University in Amsterdam.
